Against the will of parents, judge authorizes death of baby

The 8-month-old child has been diagnosed with a rare genetic disease and no longer hears or moves. The parents, however, wanted to try a special treatment.

The High Court's decision was received with shouts of "no!" By the family of Charlie Gard, who intended to take the baby to the United States for an experimental treatment.

However, doctors at London's Great Ormond Street Hospital say it is high time that the child suffering from brain damage receives palliative care.

The child's parents are "devastated" by the court ruling, according to their lawyer, Laura Hobey-Hamsher.

Judge Nicholas Francis said he took the decision "with the greatest of sorrows", but with "the absolute conviction" of doing the best for the baby, who deserves a "worthy death."

"I want to thank Charlie's parents for their courageous and dignified campaign on their behalf, but above all, to pay tribute to their total dedication to their wonderful son from the day he was born," continued the judge.

During the trial, a doctor explained that the child no longer listens or moves, and is suffering unnecessarily.

Charlie has a form of mitochondrial disease that causes progressive weakening of muscles and brain damage.

The case sparked great interest in the United Kingdom and their parents, Chris Gard and Connie Yates, opened a fundraising campaign that reached the 1.2 million francs they needed to take the child to the United States, thanks to more donations. Of 80,000 people.

It is not the first time an English judge has authorized doctors to turn off life support for a baby against parental opinion.

It also occurred in 2015 with a girl who suffered irreversible brain damage from running out of oxygen during childbirth in a car.
