The new executive order signed by the President of the United States, Donald Trump, stimulates the purchase of national products and the hiring of Americans. Called "Buy American, Hire American," the executive order follows the nationalistic line adopted by Trump during the campaign and orders government agencies to re-evaluate free trade agreements that are damaging the domestic industry.
In addition, the text, signed yesterday (18), stipulates that temporary work visa grant programs, such as the H1B visa for aliens, should be reviewed.
"To buy and hire Americans I sign this order that will protect workers and students like you," Trump told workers at a factory in Wisconsin.
In line with "America first," Donald Trump said that from the signed order the federal agencies will have to review the procedures, both in trade negotiations, and in the temporary hiring of foreigners.
The goal is to protect certain products in the North American market. In Trump's view, trade agreements hampered domestic industry, causing factory closures and lowering of workers' wages due to cheaper imported goods. This rhetoric was one of the most forceful during Donald Trump's campaign.
Trump said the order would "aggressively" promote domestic manufacturing and trade, and ensure that Americans are hired primarily before a foreigner.
In speaking, the president criticized the World Trade Organization (WHO). "It's one of our disasters," he said. And it again disqualified the so-called North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). "Naphtha is a complete disaster."
Temporary job
The granting of temporary work visas until then had been carried out annually with a volume of up to 85,000 visas per year.
Critics of the Trump government argue that foreign labor contracted through temporary work visas does not necessarily compete or prevent Americans from getting a job.
In general, foreign contracted professionals have a high level of education and specific skills that companies claim to be lacking in the national market. Professionals in the areas of health, information technology and technology are the most requested.
However, Trump argues that program review is necessary because some companies used the prerogative to hire foreign professionals with lower salaries who could pay a highly-skilled US professional.
