Thousands of people gathered yesterday afternoon (6) on Paulista Avenue, central region of São Paulo, during the March of Marijuana. Activists took to the streets to end the drug war and in defense of legalization.

The act - which has taken place since 2008 - this year had as its motto "Breaking chains, planting seeds". The Marijuana Marijuana Collective of São Paulo claimed "the right to plant marijuana - and freedom - in place of the chains that keep imprisoning us. Our struggle today is to legalize the production, distribution and use of the plant in Brazil for its most varied purposes. But not only! It's also the end of the drug war across the globe! ", Says the group on its social network page.

The Marijuana March was organized into thematic blocks. DAR Collective activist Gabriela Moncao said the blocs were intended to qualify the debate over the end of the drug war. "We think legalization is important, we believe that everyone is affected by the prohibitionist drug policy in various ways and the march tries to bring to the population our arguments for ending the drug war," he said.

The representative of the Cannabis Cultural Association of São Paulo (ACuCa), Rodrigo Martins, said that the march draws attention to freedom of choice. "With the march, we claim our right to use our bodies the way we want. We hope to achieve the long-standing legalization of marijuana and the decriminalization of other drugs as well. " For him, the march still serves to demystify prejudices. "The march is also to draw attention from the population to the disregard that is made with all types of users, but mainly the poor and peripheral blacks who suffer the most from the drug war."

The concentration occurred in the free space of the Museum of Art of São Paulo (Masp). At around 4:30 p.m., the group started a march on Avenida Paulista in the direction of Brigadeiro, going through Avenida Brigadeiro Luís Antônio and headed towards the Praça da Sé. During the walk, the traffic was blocked along the route in a direction of the road .

Medicinal Block Defends Controlled Use

On the front committee of the March was the Medicinal Block, which advocates the controlled use of marijuana as medicine. The aircraft supplier Gabriel Alcides Castelo de Oliveira was in the march for the first time. His son, aged 6, has microcephaly, cerebral palsy and epilepsy and has been using medical marijuana for three years.

He still imports the substance extracted from the plant to make use of and fights for liberation in Brazil. "My son has had very good gains in quality of life, he started going to school and epilepsy is controlled due to the medical use of marijuana." He and his family participated in the march and hope that medical use will be authorized. "We expect more and more families and lives to be rescued through medical marijuana, we are here to spread the information," he adds.

The Respire project, which works in the context of parties with people who use drugs, was also in the march. The coordinator of the project, Gabriel Pedrosa, explains that the group works with information and strategies of care and harm reduction in the use of drugs. "We understand that the greatest harm reduction is information, the knowledgeable person will have the ability to make a more knowledgeable decision."
